Notes on The Federal Trade Commission

If you are engaged in a duspute or are the victim of fraud or abuse by a financial institution or company, the Federal Trade Commission is one agency you can turn to. The FTC is the US government agency responsible for enforcing federal antitrust and consumer protection laws.

Legitimate consumer complaints and letters are one way to trigger an investigation by the FTC. They welcome these although they do not normally intervene in the case of individual disputes. They do act however if a pattern is detected. The FTC will often allow a company to correct identified problems without the case going public and without the company admitting to a violation of the law. This gives copanies an incentive to settle quickly in order to avoid further action.
